London Buses route 79 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England. Running between Alperton and Edgware, it is operated by Metroline.

History

Route 79 commenced operation on 21 November 1987 between Alperton Station and Edgware Bus Station via Wembley, Preston, Queensbury and Canons Park as a Monday to Saturday route. It was initially operated by London Buslines using Daimler Fleetlines. The route is a renumbering of route 79A.

On 3 September 1991, it was extended from Alperton Station to Alperton Sainsburys.

In 1993, the Daimler Fleetlines were replaced by Alexander bodied Leyland Olympians

On 23 November 1996, the route passed to MTL London operating from their North Acton (NA) garage using Marshall Capital bodied MAN 11.220s, the two school day journeys operated by Centrewest from their Alperton (ON) garage using MCW Metrobuses and a Sunday service was introduced.

In August 1998, the route was included in the sale of MTL London to Metroline.

In 1999, the main allocation was transferred to North Wembley (NW) garage and the Marshall Capital bodied MAN 11.220s were replaced by Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Darts and the MCW Metrobus was replaced by a Leyland Olympian.

On 24 November 2001, the route was passed to First CentreWest operating from their Alperton (ON) garage using brand new low floor Plaxton President bodied Dennis Tridents.

In November 2002, the Plaxton President bodied Dennis Tridents were replaced by Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs.

In February 2004, the Plaxton President bodied Volvo B7TLs were replaced by brand new Wright Eclipse Gemini bodied Volvo B7TLs.

On 25 November 2006, the route was retained by First CentreWest.

On 26 November 2011, the route passed to Metroline operating from their Perivale East (PV) garage using brand new Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TLs.

On 23 June 2012, the allocation was transferred to Perivale West (PA) garage.

In July 2014, East Lancs Olympus bodied Scania N230UDs were introduced.

On 6 August 2016, the allocation was transferred back to Perivale East (PV) garage and the route was converted to full Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 bodied Volvo B9TL operation.

The route will pass to London Sovereign and will be operating from their Edgware (BT) garage using brand new Wright Eclipse Gemini 3 bodied Vovlo B5LHs from 8 December 2018.
